Known to be rich in sulfur and as an excellent antioxidant, onion juice has many health properties. The juice is used for weight loss, metabolism booster, and also a miraculous hair treatment solution. For the latter, its juice is extracted and applied directly to the hair to cure hair loss, strengthen hair, enhance luster and shine, and cure alopecia and patterned baldness to some extent.

The article will provide some light on the usefulness and benefits of onion juice on the hair.

Onion and Hair growth

Hair issues involve hair fall, hair thinning, hair breakage and spillage, dryness of scalp resulting in itchiness, dandruff, inflammation, fungal growth, and other scalp infections, which again result in hair fall. While hair fall is common these days, owing to the growing pollution, exposure to UV rays, environmental radicals, and other damages, the lack of self-care leads to common issues of hair deterioration and may also lead to baldness. The latter could also be due to hereditary patterns. Onion is a natural and affordable home remedy for hair growth and protection. It is a simple solution to nourish the hair follicles with its sulfur content and boost catalase, the antioxidant.

Can onion juice stop hair loss?

Many science research reports show that onion juice can help with hair loss in many ways. Let’s understand how it is possible.

Sulfur-rich

Onion is rich in sulfur which is one of the required nutrients. Sulfur can be found within amino acids which are in turn responsible for proteins. Keratin is rich in proteins. These keratins are known to be sulfur-rich thus, responsible for strengthening and promoting hair growth. Also, the sulfur in onion juice extracts helps boost the production of collagen- which is responsible for hair growth and healthy skincare.

Antioxidant

Onions are a great source of antioxidants and, therefore, optimize hair growth, delay graying, premature or otherwise, and safeguard the quality of the hair from environmental damages.

Blood circulation

It is also proven that onion juice stimulates blood circulation once applied to the scalp. Therefore, the circulation helps feed enough nutrients through the increased blood supply to the hair follicles and thus, promoting hair growth.

Other properties

The relationship between onion and hair growth extends to its antifungal and antibacterial properties, which further help treat dry and itchy scalp, dandruff, and other scalp infections.

Take a fine muslin cloth or a strainer to strain the coarse onion scrap from its juice extracts. Take the extract and can either do the following-

  • Add it to a few spoons of coconut oil, according to your hair volume. Add a few drops of lemon juice if you wish to conceal the strong onion smell. Apply the oil and keep it for 30 minutes before you cleanse your hair.

However, the only disadvantage of using onion juice on hair could arise if you are allergic to the same. Before applying it directly to your scalp, it is advisable to perform a patch test on your skin. It involves taking a small amount of the extract and applying it to a part of your skin. See if that causes any sort of irritation. Other disadvantages may include itching, redness, irritation to the skin. The patch test will be a precautionary measure. If it shows none, you can continue the application on your hair and see the visible outcomes in no time.
